Join the Slow Food Boston Board of Directors!

10/9/2017

Slow Food Boston is seeking two board members to join our diverse group of passionate food lovers and activists. As the local chapter of Slow Food USA, we advocate for food that tastes good, is produced cleanly and sustainably, and recognizes the importance of fair treatment for all people involved. To achieve these goals, we are building a community of like-minded organizations, businesses, and individuals working together to make Boston a national leader in the movement toward an equitable, sustainable, healthy, and delicious food system.

We are an all-volunteer board. Members of the Board of Directors should be willing to commit two years to the leadership of our chapter, and be able to commit between 5-10 hours a month to chapter business, with some additional time in the lead-up and running of events. We meet every 4-6 weeks in Cambridge or Boston, usually on a weekday evening when most of us are free. In addition to the specific responsibilities of your role, board members work collaboratively to plan and support chapter events, maintain and grow our membership, coordinate volunteers as needed, and engage the broader local food community on issues related to the Slow Food values of Good, Clean, and Fair Food for All. We are the representatives of the Slow Food movement in Boston, so expect to spend some time talking to the public about the mission, history, and goals of Slow Food International, USA, and our local chapter, and display a willingness to share how Slow Food resonates with you and what brought you to the table.
We are currently looking to fill the following positions:

Secretary & Membership Coordinator
The Board Secretary serves a crucial role in the basic functionality and internal communication of Slow Food Boston. Core responsibilities include scheduling meetings, providing agendas in advance, recording meeting minutes, and archiving information to ensure institutional memory. The Secretary also maintains our annual events calendar and works with other board members to ensure timelines are scheduled and observed, and chapter paperwork is filed on time. Our Secretary serves the additional role of Membership Coordinator, which requires maintaining updated membership lists, reminding members to renew, and encouraging new membership by communicating the benefits of membership with the broader Boston food community.
  • Experience: Similar duties in non-profit, community, or student organization. Diligent note-taker, group organizer, scheduler.
  • Competency: Patience and good facilitation skills. Ability to allow some tangents in our conversation before steering it back on task to keep us on schedule.

Community Cultivator
The Community Cultivator manages the online face of Slow Food Boston and presents an outgoing and engaging presence at Slow Food events and gatherings. Maintains our social media accounts—including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and MeetUp—while exploring potential new channels to engage our members and followers online. Specific expectations include event promotion, sharing appropriate content and articles, event photography and album curation, and drafting the Slow Food Boston newsletter via MailChimp. Serves as liaison to other chapters to bolster efforts to create a “Slow Food New England” regional identity.
  • Experience: Social media management and distribution (we use Hootsuite), content creation, online strategy and analytics, experience or interest in exploring multimedia engagement strategies (YouTube, Facebook Live, Instagram Stories, Periscope, etc.).
  • Competency: Excellent writing and communication skills, ability to discriminate between and craft channel-appropriate content, keen understanding of existing and potential audiences. Must be able to organize and keep to a regular communication schedule, as well as respond quickly as events unfold.

Does one of these positions sound like a good fit for you? Do you have 5-10 hours a month to commit? If so we'd love to hear from you! Please email the board at bostonma@slowfoodusa.org with a little about yourself, your connection to food, and why you think your talents would be a good fit for Slow Food Boston!

SFB welcomes people of all backgrounds, including those who have been marginalized within the current food system. We are working together to ensure all voices are heard.

If you didn't get a chance to attend our Tour de Farms in the North Shore last month, here's a 2nd opportunity for you and your biking buddies to come check out your local farms along our northern coast and participate in a leisurely bike ride led by NOFA/MASS's very own Dan Bensonoff!   Come join us on Saturday, October 14th (Rain date:  10/15) and chat with farmers of the north shore and learn about what's being sown and grown in this beautiful coastal region.  Ride across the scenic New England countryside passing along gorgeous autumn foliage at its peak!  You'll also get to have a delicious, satisfying lunch specially prepared by us and Dan!

For our last stop, you'll get to cool down and explore a local apple orchard, where you can go apple-picking, sample of some fresh cider and have at some warm, freshly made cider donuts if you so choose!

Rides are $60 per person which includes a guided ride across several local farms and lunch (does not include purchases made at the apple orchard); meeting location and ride details will be sent to registrants shortly before the event date.  Registration is limited, so don't miss out and sign up here!
